I have always had a love for mermaids since I was a child. Turning back to them is a way to reconnect to my childhood's enjoyable memories, further exploring the technical
knowledge I have gained at MassArt. The ability to observe from life and receive invaluable feedback to become a better representational artist has been monumental in my paintings. I am working with images and combining multiple sources to comprehend mermaids
into believable environments.
These paintings convey mermaids having enjoyable experiences, whether alone or
with friends; gossiping, chatting and having intimate conversations or simply exploring the underwater world. Mermaids would not experience human issues or societal pressures, unlike my struggles with mental health and body image. My work suggests a
subliminal focus on larger bodies and body inclusivity, as I have always been larger
myself. These experiences have turned me to find a tranquil and relaxing space,
which I create in my paintings.
The aquarium and a calming blue underwater scene have been influences for the atmosphere that I create in these works. The rich blue tones that envelop the submerged environments to the warm yellows and greens that shine down onto the lagoons create an enjoyable space to dive into.
